Museo della Ceramica Casimiro Marcantoni Ceramics Museum

The Museum documents ceramic activity from its craft origins to the maturation of its industrial production. It is housed in the former medieval Church of San Giorgio, in the same premises where the Regia Scuola Professionale per la Ceramica (Royal Professional School for Ceramics) was founded in 1914.

The Museum tells the history of ceramics from the end of the 18th century to the 1960s, focusing on the history of the workplaces and industrial archaeology as well as the history of ceramic art and technology.

It is dedicated to one of the most important figures in the history of the town’s ceramic production, Casimiro Marcantoni, a daring entrepreneur and founder of the flourishing Marcantoni Factory.

In the exhibition spaces, visitors can admire exhibits ranging from fine pottery and crockery created at the end of, to objects linked to the artistic production of the 20th century, with exhibits including ceramics from the historical factories of Civita Castellana, such as  the Sbordoni, Marcantoni, Percossi, Faci, Maisc, Vaselli, and Coramusi factories. Each factory had its own unique style, making Civita Castellana’s ceramic art eclectic and multiform.

There is also a section dedicated to the technical aspects and craftsmanship of this art. Among the many tools, moulds and implements on display, visitors will find an authentic lathe from the 1950s that belonged to ceramist Osvaldo Cirioni.

The collection is enriched by a selection of oriental objects dating back to the beginning of the 20th century, which were taken from the private collection of Ulderico Midossi, who founded the Regia Scuola Professionale per la Ceramica in the spot where the Museum now stands.
