Day 1
Arrival in Acquapendente and accommodation in hotel or other facility. Guided tour of the Cathedral of the Holy Sepulchre and the Crypt, which houses the oldest copy, in Europe, of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, guardian of important ceramic works by Jacopo Beneventano (16th-century artist) and Mario Vinci (contemporary artist who died in 2018). We continue with a walk along the Via Francigena to the Bishop’s Palace, home to the Museo Civico e Diocesano di Acquapendente – Civic and Diocesan Museum of Acquapendente – and the Bishop’s Prisons. At the end of the visit, stop at the Caffetteria La Campanella, in front of which there was a ceramics kiln in the 16th century, and where visitors can still admire artefacts found in a butto, as well as ceramic works by local craftsmen.
The itinerary continues with the Church of Sant’Agostino, Piazza and Fonte Rigombo, the Church of Santa Vittoria, where the deeds of the Arte dei Vascellari were stipulated, Piazza Girolamo Fabrizio and the Palazzo Comunale and Porta della Ripa. A visit to the Cordeschi Amphitheatre, built exclusively with bricks made from local clay and processed by the Cordeschi Factory concludes the day’s activities.
Free dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.
Day 2
Breakfast at the hotel or other facility. Trip to Torre Alfina, a small village that takes its name from the Latin ad fines due to its location on the edge of the plateau of Orvieto. Its history is intertwined with that of the Castle, built in medieval times and renovated at the end of the 19th century at the behest of Count Edoardo Cahen. In the streets of the centre, one can admire contemporary art installations, created between 2005 and 2006 on the occasion of the Chambre d’Amis Festival, organised by the painter Thomas Lange. Ceramic sculptures by the artists Mutsuo Hirano, Mario Vinci, Piero Calamai and majolica tiles by Rita Pepparulli can be admired. The walk through this beautiful village continues with a visit to the Castle, whose construction probably dates back to the 8th century.
In the afternoon, we go to Trevinano, so called because it stands at the junction of three roads leading respectively to Lazio, Umbria and Tuscany. Hence the strategic importance of the castle, now owned by the Buoncompagni-Ludovisi family, during the Middle Ages.
Costs. Price per person in a double room: from € 145.00. The cost includes: overnight stay at the indicated accommodation with bed and breakfast, guided tours and entrance fees as per the programme.
